The parents of Naeem Rehmani, who is allegedly associated with Baitullah Mehsood, have strongly denied their son’s affiliation with any terrorists groups, and have demanded that the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) take action against those who have made their lives miserable.
Addressing a press conference on Monday at the Karachi Press Club (KPC), Naeem Rehmani’s father, Qadir Bux Rehmani, along with his wife, Abida, asked the media how his son could be declared a terrorist possessing a huge cache of arms and ammunition when he had never even driven a nail into the wall.
They said that their son was innocent and was being punished for his uncle, Tariq Rehmani’s, association with the political party. Tariq Rehmani joined the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in 2000, when he came from abroad and disassociated himself in the year 2007 after being disappointed with the party’s performance.
Tariq Rehmani, who was also present, told The News separately that he was the man who established the MQM in erstwhile Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) strongholds because he thought that the MQM leadership had made commitments to the people which he thought, could change the face of Lyari for the better.
Naeem Rehmani was arrested by the CID police late on Friday for his alleged involvement with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and also reportedly yielded a large number of arms and ammunition. His parents, in voices choked with emotion, told the media that their son had never visited any other parts of the city outside Lyari.
They said that he was also arrested in 2004 by CID DSP Choudhry Safdar and implicated in false cases after having been in detention for three years. “We’re still bearing the brunt of that tragedy and are still paying off loans incurred during the proceedings of the last case.”
Naeem Rehmani is an only child, and the sole bread-earner of his family. He married two years ago and has a seven-month-old daughter. Qadir Bux said that previously, Naeem Rehmani was arrested and “sold” to the Kalakot SHO due to the latter’s enmity with Tariq Rehmani. The family had held a press conference and the then-IG, Kamal Shah, suspended the SHO.
