In Pakistan history always repeats itself, especially on the political horizon. Every top power grabber in the country tries to install his own Yes-man and then that Yes-man eases that top man off the palace with disgust and then become the power broker only to be ousted by his own hand-picked Yes-man.
General Yahya Khan was selected by General Ayub, the field marshal and then it was Yahya who threw out Ayub. Then Zulfikar Ali Bhutto choosed General Zia ul Haq, and then Zia hang Bhutto without any trouble. Zia came up with homeopathic Junejo and it was Junejo who showed his colors. Then Nawaz Sharif and Benazir bitten by Ghulam Ishaq Khan, and then Benazir by Farooq Leghari and then Nawaz Sharif by Musharraf and then Musharraf by Chaudhrys and now Zardari has comeup with his own puppet Gilani, but the puppet has started to show the historic restlessness.
Zardari is already very apprehensive about the Gilani. Majority of Pakistanis are apprehensive about Zardari, as currently it is he who is making the decisions and this frightening for many inside and outside Islamabad. Gilani and Zardari should keep on working but there should be a natural balance. The power to appoint service chiefs and governors must revert to the prime minister and his parliament and PM should be independent in selecting his advisors and the cabinet.
For all that to happen, they have to amend the 17th amendment.
