We Are Getting It Back- Reverse your watches

By Rai Azlan

It was 13th April 2009, when we lost it for the third time. Many of us ere in famous and many of us took it as a funny thing. Even I know many people who never lost it I don’t know what I should call to these people because our own status is not sure to me. Well cutting the long story short finally we are going to have it back in our life. I am talking about the Hour we took out of our lives by changing time from 12 am to 1am in the midnight of 12-13 April.

It was not for the first time happened to us. For the first time we lost it in April 2002 and got it back in October of the same year. It happened again last year when it was gone in May and came back like a lost of morning in November. This year once again we lost that one hour in April however, as always it is going to be back in our life again as we are going to have this day consisting of 25 hours.

When I look at the reason of losing it I can see it as a sacrifice rather than lose. Yes we sacrificed this one hour for more than half a year with the hope to make the things better. This system is called Daylight Saving Time, I wanted to write about it deeply but many of us do not bother the history and mystery, it was first adopted by Romans but the modern and more idea of Daylight Saving was given by an entomologist George Vernon Hudson from New Zealand, and since than it is being adopted as soon as people understand its utility.

The aim behind this act is to use the daylight which we normally waste during summers. Pakistan adopted this thing again this year with the aim to better the energy scenario and many other things connected to energy and power. In 2002 this idea was a big flop as it was failed to bring the fruit at the end of season. Last year it was in the arena again to fight with the sever energy crises. Last year targets of 500 to 700 MW saving a day was the target. Unfortunately WAPDA never met it.

This year Pakistan was facing a short fall of about 3000MW when this fuss or blessing, whatever you like to call, came in the scene. After more than 6 month the shortfall is almost the same. And right now literally I have no idea about how much we have gain after losing this hour. It’s a promise when I know something it will be disclosed to you all by me.

As far as my views towards this daylight saving system are concerned I am in favor of it, as I believe it is useful only if it is properly used. Such systems can be useful if it is adopted on consistent and long term basis as in adopting this system every year. The second thing which could make it more useful is creating a sense among the people of the country about the benefits of this system and educate them who to use and avail it. Otherwise this system will remain a failure in Pakistan as it has been in 2002 and 2008.

Once again my problem is the same that how to wind up the post. So I want to end it by congratulating all of you on getting, what we have lost, back. Let all of us wait to outcome of this sacrifice come out.We are getting it back:
